About Us & Our History

The Group is first registered on October 28th 1930 as the 8th Pitt Street Wesleyan (Reg No. 907)at headquarters. At that time the group had Scarlet Necker’s, the Scout Master was Mr Horace Pine, who lived at 33 Summer Lane.

1943 the Scout Census shows that the group had changed its name to the 23rd Pitt Street Methodist and they were meeting in the Pitt Street Methodist Church Sunday School room.

1947 The group was still meeting at Pitt Street Methodist Chapel, however the group had changed their Necker to Black

1962 the Necker was changed from Black to Lemon and Black halves. Our current Chairman Dave Hopkins and Scout Sectional Assistant Dave Ashworth remember the change of colour and bleaching the black ones to make grey triangular bandages.

Early 1970’s the Group name was changed to the 28th Barnsley and the Neckers changed again, this time to Lemon and Royal Blue halves.

In early 1980 the structure of Pitt Street Chapel was found to be unstable and the group was forced to relocate to Buckley Street Methodist Chapel. The group remained there for several years until they again moved to Elim Church, Nelson Street, to be closer to their original town centre base.

2003 the Group were homeless again and took refuge in The Christian Fellowship School, Blucher Street until they moved across the road to Salem Chapel.

2005 the 28th Barnsley (Central) merged with the 22nd Barnsley and agreed a new name of 22nd Barnsley (Central) and a new Necker Lemon and Royal Blue halves, with Lemon and Royal Blue alternative borders. This gave the group a permanent home based on Queens Drive, Wilthorpe.
